Wednesday’s Card: Up Up and Away Birthday

Hi All!

Let me start by saying… I’m sorry. Here I am writing up my post about this card video, talking about how happy I am that this Up Up & Away stamp set has been carried over into next year. So, then I start working on my supplies list. Where is the stamp set? My link wasn’t working anymore. Why? Because it’s retired!!! Ugh. How frustrating. I really try hard to use stamp sets that are not retired. All I can say is… eBay.

Well, at least the Itty Bitty Banners with matching framelits are still available. My favorite thing about these sentiments is their outlines. I always like to draw things around my elements, I guess to organize them. I used to ink the edges with black ink, but that seems a little out of style now. It’s kind of weird that a stamping technique can be out of style, doesn’t it? Not sure how else to describe it.

I used masking to create the sky, and I colored my balloon with Copics. I’m telling you… these things really take practice. I have finally figured out how to “feather” the Copic marker. I give a couple of tips in the video.

The new Stampin’ Up! annual catalog was released on Friday! I already placed my order, so you’ll see me using some of the new items soon. And I also ordered something that has been around awhile. Sometimes it just takes awhile to finally notice something! Shop here or view the catalog.

I have one more post with Jill Foster this Friday. We will be featuring cards that YOU have uploaded into the Penny Circle Flickr Gallery. If you haven’t already created something with the stamp sets we used, it’s not too late!

Anyway, sorry again about the stamp set, but still enjoy the video!

Very clever using the color of the Memento ink and the black copic marker for dimension! Thanks for sharing all of your wonderful tips with feathering too! I’ll have to see if those make a difference in my coloring. Cute card.

I so look forward to Wednesday’s when you share your latest card and video tutorial. I’ve recently started purchasing Copic markers because of the inspiration that I receive from your blog. Love that you give tips and tricks with them. Thank you for sharing your talent with us.

You’re Amazing is still there and it has a hot air balloon. I think it would work quite nicely as a substitute in this card.

Great card. Love the technique you used to do the clouds. The coloring of the balloon is great. Thanks for the tips!

Might I make a couple of suggestions for the ballons
*hero arts Art of the Card AC007 Past Times has a ballon as well as several other modes of transport-bi-plane, train bike, etc
*Taylored Expressions “Sky’s the Limit” 3 ballons and accompanying die cut

Brilliant, as always! Thanks for the tips on the feathering, I’ll have to play some more with it. I also love the way your sky looks with the clouds.

Hot air balloons are one of my passions. I guess it’s e-Bay here I come! LOL!

    Love from Colorado,

Love it as usual! Just curious, do you think the clouds look upside down when they are sponged that way? Love the cloud punch!

Angie, I guess I picture it like the balloon is floating up towards the clouds, not on top of them. But either way would work!

Brilliant coloring on your balloon…thanks for the tips on Copic “feathering”.

Love it! I am dying to know what the older item you just bought from Stampin’ Up is!! Can you tell or do we just have to wait and find out?? 🙂

Is the feathering technique causing the balloons to look glossy? I like how you colored the black part of the balloon with your copics, so that the lighter shade of black could be the highlight.

Cheryl, yes, that’s what I’m referring to. The little fine lines made by the marker in the highlighted area of the balloon.

Hey Darlene — Don’t ever apologize for using a “retired” set. I’ve had this set on my want list for nearly two years — and just barely got it snapped up before it hit the “to be retired” list this spring. So you have no idea how excited I am to see you putting a sample out using that set. I’m gonna try this one right away 🙂 And thank you — your designs are so beautiful. I follow you faithfully and I love all of them.

Another great card Darlene and again you give us such great tips on copic coloring. It’s good to see you use a retired set as I’m sure many of us have so many of them! I can’t wait to see you make a card with the Stippled Blossom set as it’s one of my favourites – thanks!

You have my permission to use a retired set. I’m sure that not every stamper uses only new products regardless what product lines they favor. Wednesdays are so special, looking forward to what you will bring us. We always get to see every step. I LUV that!

Wow! Love the way you colored the balloon, really striking! Great card, as usual 🙂

Loved how that balloon just popped out of the frame. So fun. Thanks again for sharing.

Clever use of the Fiskars punch to do your cloud effect, I have always cut an acetate template and used it over and over. Your way gives a little more versatility for rearranging the clouds. Great colouring as always and I too am all for using older sets as there are plenty of us who take a while to purchase them and then need the inspiration to play.

I am a watcher of your videos…have been for over a year, but not sure I ever really comment. Gotta say that I really love the feel of this card. It reminds me A LOT of the feel and colors of the Find Your Wings And Fly lines that are about by My Mind’s Eye right now. 🙂

Hello Darlene: I’m also happy you used a retired stamp set, (I happily own this one!!) I’m sure you have a bunch of those great sets that were sent away but you can still use. I love this set, it’s so fun and you can really use it for many occasions. The way you colored that balloon reminded me of that kind of candy that is stretched and mixed with color to make toffee. That’s the color it gets when they do that, it’s like little tiny bubbles of air are trapped in there and this gives this candy that very soft, velvety look. Thank you for this truly fabulous card.

Hello, Darlene, so happy to see this card made for a birthday celebration. ABSOUBTLEY LOVE IT!! Easy and creative. What I am most happy about viewing your creations is that stamps and copic markers are being used. I have been using these supplies for about 6 months now and enjoy creating my cards. Thank you once again for this simple but yet awesome card, can’t wait for next week’s idea.

Darlene, you are just the BEST! Glad to hear others say no apologies needed for using a retired set, I agree! Whether it’s a SU retired, current, or another company’s, I’m just happy watching you do your magic girl! You could use a child’s coloring book for all I care, just keep ’em coming, please! Can’t wait to see what you’ve picked out of the new catty and then I’ll be going straight to your sister’s site to put in my order. And I love, love, LOVE your new banner and organization of your blog!! No surprise you are raising such smart girls, their Mama is brilliant! Thanks for all you do for us, your faithful stalkers! = )

Thanks for taking the time to make those videos!! I enjoy watching them each week and always seem to learn another little technique. Keep them coming.
