Chalkboard Butterfly

Hi All,

I’m calling this a chalkboard because it kind of looks like one to me, but maybe not? I don’t know. 🙂

The technique is pretty easy, and the good news is that you can be really sloppy with your distress ink and not worry about blocks and lines, lol!!

I decided to leave off the sentiment for now. Maybe I’ll add one later. If I do, I’ll probably put it in the lower right corner. Or maybe I’ll just leave it blank – I kind of like it nice and clean.

    Love the card and will be trying your technique soon. I have the green distress ink but do not have the black.

    I do have many other black inks of course. Is the distress ink best for this chalkboard technique or would another black dye ink work?

      Hi Karen, I think it should work with any water-based ink. Let me know how it goes!

      Heather, my nails were black and I had to go out!! I guess you couldn’t see it in the video, but it’s definitely there. 🙂

    I so love this technique and the only thing that’s stopping me from trying it is my fear of messing it up. This video is very informative and, as always, your step by step instructions are clear and easy to follow. I’m sure I will need to practice a lot, just like with the sponging but it’s all so very worth it.

    Love this card and layout is great. Can’t wait to get back to carding, will try this layout for sure. Your layouts are always great, do you have a place you get sketches and/or do create all of them yourself? Your chalkboard technique is different from what I have seen others do, love the look.

      Hi Carol, I’ve only used a sketch once, which I posted with my card maybe a few months ago. I just make them up, which is probably why each card takes me so long!!

    Love this card Darlene. I’ve seen a few cards made with this technique, but I love your technique (with this green tinge) the best – and again, your copic coloring is awesome with some more great hints on how to make images look so good. Looking forward to seeing what you created over at Ellen Hutson – have ordered quite a few products from her and they’ve always been so prompt with shipping to me in Australia.

    OOPS! I think I commented in the wrong place, when I thought I was commenting on this card! Oh dear, my lack of computer skills is showing, again! Love the “chalkboard” effect that you used. Really like the hint of green under the black. Love the butterfly, of course, but that split negative look of the piece that you attached it to is genious! You are amazing. Can’t wait until the Ellen Hutson thing. Where will I look for that? (Ahem, okay, I admit I am not a techie, wish I was, but just not.) Go “WOW” them over there, Darlene, as I know you will!! TFS!!!
