Welcome back for the second card in my Homemade Techniques series! I decided to study my pantry for possible items to use. As I stood there examining the contents, I saw the rice. I buy A LOT of rice. I used to buy all that whole grain brown stuff but then decided to live life to the fullest and go with white. 🙂 Anyway… I remembered that you’re supposed to submerge your iPhone in rice if it gets wet. Apparently the rice will suck all the water out of your phone. I wondered what effect it would have on watercolor, so I brought it to my craft room and was pleasantly surprised by the results:
I used my Gansai Tambi watercolors, which go on quite thick. Here is a close-up of the design left by the rice:
I decided to also try the rice with Peerless watercolor (Alizarine Red, Orange Yellow, and Brilliant Yellow). The effect was a lot softer:

To finish off this Peerless card, I just white embossed one of the sentiments from I Love You More on black cardstock, cut it up, and popped it onto the center of the card.

Hi Darlene, Aha! I looked at your card before watching the video and wondered if that was rice in the background. Sure enough it was. Of course, you’d never guess that it was rice unless you were looking for something around the house that you were going to use. And the rice is so effective too. I can hardly wait to try this one. I plan to do this technique tomorrow for another birthday card. I might even throw in a butterfly for good measure and enter it for the Challenge. Would that be cheating?! LOL

Your rice cards turned out great, Darlene! I tried the foil card placing the bakers twine just as you did in the video and one on an angle. I liked them both ways but your way shows more dimension to the card. Now, I wonder how the cards will mail. 🙂

Jan, when I mail cards with something on the front that I am worried about crushing, I turn my card inside out and put it in the envelope like that. I know the recipient will wonder that the heck you did, but it really protects it from the postage machines. Hope that helps!?

Boy that rice really works wonders. It reminds me of something you would see under a microscope in a way, but that is just the science nerd in my speaking. The colors are gorgeous though!
