Rock ‘n Roll Flower Stamping

Hi All!

There are actually two techniques used on this card… “rock ‘n roll” and “velveteen”. Rock ‘n roll is when you ink your stamp with a light color, then roll the edges in a darker color. It has been around for a long time but I thought I would revisit it.

Velveteen is a look you get when you stamp in white ink, then stamp in dye ink on top. You can see the white design showing through on my close-up picture:

I learned about this technique from a video by Shari Carroll on the Hero Arts Blog. I’ll have to do it again with some darker ink colors next time, which will really show the white underneath.

  Hi Marianne. The velveteen is when you stamp with the white ink (my flourish background), then stamp on top of it with colored dye inks. The white shows through. You can sort of see it in my close-up photo.

I’m sure I’m not the only one who appreciates you leaving your inking of the image sheet in the video. One, we’ve all been there; two, maybe you prevented someone else from doing it. I hate when I mask a stamp with tape and forget to remove the tape before stamping. 🙂

Really lovely. I think your leaves & stems look terrific. I thought it was another stamp. I never can get this rock & roll technique right. Think it’s because I was using to big of a block .Thanks for the tip.

Very pretty. I’m lovin my misti too. It saves me a lot in errors! Just did a personalized gift tag for my niece for Easter. She will be impressed and it was so easy with misti. The rock and roll technique makes for a nice touch.. It sure looks like you spent hours on it. Thanks for sharing.

I don’t think you need to worry about drawing the leaves on this card. The ones you drew were delicate and fitting for the flower design. Nicely done

Question From Connie: Hi Darlene, I really love your rock and roll technique this week. I don’t have the Ranger black enamel that you used in the flower centres but I do have a black soot distress marker and glossy accents. Thought I could use them instead of the black enamel to achieve a similar effect. What do you think? Happy Easter!

  To get the same effect, I would try coloring the glossy accents with the black marker after it has dried. Because the Black Soot is very water-based, it may not cover the accents. In that case, I would use a Copic marker or a sharpie.

I had forgotten about the rock and roll technique, probably because I am not a big stamper of images and don’t have many sets that I could use. This reminds me to pull out an old set I have and give it a go.
