Product Review: Finetec vs. Gansai Tambi Pearl Watercolors

Finetec vs Gansai Tambi

Hi All!

Today I am comparing Finetec Pearl Watercolors and Gansai Tambi Pearl Watercolors (both the Pearl set and the Starry Set). During the review, I pulled out my Gansai Tambi watercolors for a little experiment with some great results!

Just a quick note… I ordered my Finetec watercolors from Simon Says Stamp. The online photo and description of the one I ordered and the one I have is different. Perhaps the product changed since I ordered it. I’m not sure it makes a difference, as I love my set and the photo looks good too, but I thought it was worth pointing out.

When it comes to shimmer, it’s very hard to capture with photos. As a result, I encourage you to watch the video for my personal observations of the samples. Scroll down for the photos. Enjoy!

Thank you for this brand comparison. I only have the Fine Tec watercolors and have had no problem using them on Neenah white cardstock for a 1-layer card.. In fact, I used them on the card i submitted for the October Challenge with very good results and with only needing to apply 1 coat.

Thanks Darlene for the comparison. I did a card for the October challenge with the Gansai Tambi pearl set on black cardstock and it turned out pretty good. I did have to do multiple layers though.

Thanks for the info. Good to know. I’ve also tried adding a bit of Perfect Pearls in the pearl color to any watercolor to get a bit of shimmer. That seems to work, too.

Just an interesting tip. I bought a very inexpensive set that looks like it could be the Finetec set but it is not. The brand is Yasutomo. They look beautiful on black cardstock and all the colors show up very pretty. I did not buy mine on Amazon but I know they did not cost very much. I see them on Amazon now for anywhere from 4.50 for 21 colors (which is what I have) to 31.49. I don’t understand the huge difference in price. I believe I bought mine at Michaels or Aaron Brothers I am not sure but I believe it was under $10.00. It was a good price for experimenting but they turned out to work pretty well.

Yes, Patty, I have that inexpensive set too. I am not sure if it is as good as Finetec, which I also own. Still, it is a good savings for the Yasutomo ones and you got more colours too. I bought mine on Ebay here in Australia and they were much cheaper but I don’t recall exactly what the price was.

I know that they aren’t as good as my Gansai ones and those are the only ones I have but they do look better than the Gansai shimmer colors on black paper. I think they will run out real fast also since there is not much product there. When they do, I may go to the Finetec for the shimmer since those colors look great on black.

Great comparison thank you. Wow the tip for GT coloured is interesting, I really think the 2-step process will work if you don’t want to invest in every palette. I’ll be trying it as I have the 36 count GT set and no finetec or specific palette. I’m going to play on the weekend and see how it works out.
Thank you for your fabulous informative comparisons.
