Pop-Tarts!

Pop-Tarts

Hi All!

I thought I would get one more Love card in before the end of the January challenge (it’s the last day to submit your card!). This new Breakfast Buddies set by Simon Says Stamp is awesome! There are so many cute stamps in it. I cringe when I think of how many Pop-Tarts I’ve eaten in my life. It was before anyone paid attention to how much sugar kids were eating for breakfast – ah, good times.

I used my Inktense Pencils to color them in. I tried to match them up to real Pop-Tart flavors, but it’s not totally exact. We all know Brown Sugar Cinnamon doesn’t have sprinkles, but who really cares?! Here is a close-up:

In the video I showed my Inktense color chart. You can download a blank copy HERE (Excel format). For more info on how I organize color, watch my Color Palettes and Swatches video.

Enjoy the video. Hope you’re having a great week!

Pop Tarts are not my favourite food choice but I still love them on this card. It all came together well and was very cute. I find that Canson XL paper easily pills on me but I probably overwork the paper. I noticed you were very light-handed. Also my Inktense pencils can bleed sometimes and the dye won’t easily come out with water and a tissue as well as my other watercolour pencils. But I love their intensity so try to be super careful. You never seem to have that problem though. I guess it all comes with practice!!

Connie, do you color the pencil directly on the paper, like Darlene did here? If so, you might try the method of picking up color from the pencil lead with a damp paintbrush/water brush and apply it to the paper that way. I always do this with my Inktense pencils, and find it gives the most control over the amount of color and where it goes (i.e. little to no bleeding). Also, you don’t want too wet of a brush. I generally use a paintbrush dipped in water, because I find I can control the amount of water better than with a water brush. And I’ve found, if your color does go where you don’t want it (at least if it’s just a little color), you can rub it gently with a damp paintbrush, and it will lift most or all of the pigment. And yes, if you overwork the paper, the Canson XL paper can pill. If I’m going to use a lot of water and/or brushing, I generally go for regular watercolor paper. Anyway, keep practicing–you can only improve, imho! 😺 ~ Andrea

Great tips, Andrea. Yes, I have been using the pencil in the same way as Darlene and have not picked up the color from the pencil lead with a damp paintbrush (I also prefer using a paintbrush instead of a waterbrush for better control. I agree that I steer away from Canson XL unless I know I am not going to use much water. I prefer Strathmore Bristol for Zig markers and the regular Strathmore watercolour paper for everything else. Practice will make perfect and that’s what I intend to do. Thanks for all your help as always. Big Hugs, Connie

I LOVE that greeting–so punny!!! I also really like the design of your card. The patterned paper adds a nice pop of color, without overwhelming the focal panel. Great job on the coloring, too! Whenever I use my Inktense pencils, I never color directly on the paper. I always pick up the color from the lead with a damp paintbrush. I just find that gives me the most control. And you’re right–you can get lots of color that way as well. Thank you for sharing this Darlene, and making me smile–I really needed that today! Hope you have a great day! 😺 ~ Andrea

Such an interesting card, Im a bit embarrassed to share that I don’t know what Pop Tarts are.
Looks like toast or biscuits with icing??? Never had one, do we have them here Aussie people??
I guess the sprinkles make me think of a donut but I actually have “no clue” about these at all.
I like the LF paper down the side which gives it a nice contrast.

Heh Dayse! They sell them at Coles and Woollies. They are made by Kellogg’s. But aren’t my cuppa tea (smile).

You’ve never had a Pop-tart? Blasphemy! You must take a trip to the stores Connie mentioned and get a box. My favorite is Brown Sugar Cinnamon. My second favorite is S’Mores. Be sure to toast it first – the inside melts and it’s SOO good. Do not, under any circumstances, eat them cold. 🙂

I LOVE POP TARTS!!! And I love this card! Still eat them once in a while, as well as surgar cereals! I was never allowed to eat them as a kid (too expensive…nevermind the sugar) so when I moved out on my own, I bought Honey Comb and Captain Crunch!! I am now 53 years old and still love sugar cereals..especially Lucky Charms (my husband rolls his eyes)! I will definitely have to get this set, I noticed a piece of toast and he loves peanut butter and toast so that would make an awsome Valentine’s Day card! thanks Darlene!

Lucky Charms is the best! I used to eat it ALL the time but then I started eating healthy about 10 years ago. I had a bowl a few months ago and it was the most delicious thing ever.
