October Challenge: White Space! (and September winner!)

October Challenge

Hi All!

Today begins the October White Space Challenge! But first, the winner of the September challenge… entry #25: Anita! Congrats, Anita, I emailed you.

Man, white space is hard! When you think you’ve almost finished your card, just say to yourself, “it’s enough”, and walk away. And, in fact, it will probably be awesome! I’m guilty of adding “more” when the card really doesn’t need it. My suggestion is to focus on one area of the card, either the center, the corner, the top, whatever. Make it the best it can be and just leave the rest. A fun experiment, right? 🙂

If you are new to the community, I encourage you to check out the Challenges Page for detailed information about how the challenges work.

The last day to submit your entry is Saturday, October 31st, 11:59pm CT. One random winner will be selected from all entries and announced on Sunday, November 1st.

SimonSaysStamp Gift Voucher
The giveaway will be a $25 gift voucher to Simon Says Stamp, one of my favorite stores!

Even though a random winner is selected at the end of the month, the challenge is open indefinitely. Please continue to post to the challenges. Continuously seeing everyone’s new work is a win for everyone’s inspiration!

Okay, just to recap the main rules:

  • Your entry must showcase white space!
  • You can submit as many entries as you like! However, please submit only one entry per card.
  • After submitting your entry, leave a comment on the entry just before yours.
  • Leave more comments on entries, if you’re so inclined. 🙂
  • To be eligible for a prize, you must be an active member of LiveLoveCards at the time the winner is announced.

I took my own suggestion and selected the bottom of my card to focus on. I used translucent embossing paste and glitter to jazz it up. Not to mention that I just love the sentiment by itself! 🙂

October Challenge

I colored the translucent embossing paste with Cracked Pistachio distress ink. So, it’s colored and textured, but you can still see the image underneath. Here is a close-up:

The image and the sentiment are from the Sprinkles of Life set, which I also used on THIS CARD. One note about the Femme Frames I used… these dies have always been difficult to find in stock. Right now, they are out of stock at both Simon Says Stamp and Ellen Hutson. However, they are included in a set called Creative Cuts, which is like a die multi-pack. You can also buy them directly from Mama Elephant.

Enjoy the video and good luck with the challenge!

Great Card Darlene. I am terrified of white space but am going to give it a try. Maybe focus on the sentiment? Not sure what I’m going to do but I will figure out something!
Thanks for the great video and the challenge.

Oh my gosh!!! Now I know what you meant when you said that the October challenge was going to be easy for me, LOL!! To be perfectly honest, I’m still getting used to leaving lots of white space in my cards but I’m getting the hang of it the more I’m participating in CAS challenges.
I love your card, that cupcake looks good enough to eat. You did a wonderfully beautiful job with this CAS and lovely card.

Beautiful Card. I just got that stamp set so Now I can make a card. I also am trying to leave things instead of doing more. Not easy. Thank you for your techniques.

    Sympathy Card

    Inside, “Sharing in Your Sorrow.”
I made this for my sister in law, as my brother is terminally ill with cancer. I made it this week, as his time is short, and I didn’t want to wait until I was grief stricken.

Not sure if my entry qualifies as white space or not since I used a die cut on the background (white on white). You guys are so right…just leaving a large blank space seems so WRONG somehow.

I loved your card Nana Jo….and also the card you made for Brittany! Beautiful!

Darlene…I have a card design idea but it’s on CRAFT paper. Is that ok for this challenge of does it need to be white??????

    • wrote on October 2nd, 2015 at 8:47 pm

      Darlene DeVries

Well, it’s supposed to be white space, but why not – go ahead!

  12. wrote on October 2nd, 2015 at 3:42 pm

I would think any color cardstock would qualify. White space usually refers to empty space, not necessarily the color. Just my opinion.

    • wrote on October 2nd, 2015 at 5:13 pm

I was wondering the same thing. Since white space is a design term for empty space, I would also think color doesn’t matter. Hopefully Darlene can clarify the requirement! 🙂 ~ Andrea

I would prefer white space, but if you have a card you really want to share with another color, you can go ahead and add it.

        • wrote on October 2nd, 2015 at 10:12 pm

If you prefer white, then OF COURSE I will do the white background! 🙂 Btw… Love, love love that cupcake card. I haven’t tried the embossing paste yet but it looks so fun!

Ok, I wanted to add a second card entry, but when I go through the process like I didn’t for the first one, it says “Link already exists” and won’t let me go any further. Got ambitious and made TWO cards in one day. I’d like to share. Any help?

    • wrote on October 2nd, 2015 at 5:11 pm

If you are adding your second card from the same blog post, it’s easy. When you paste your link in the Inlinkz box/field on the form, at the end of the link add a question mark and a number. So it would be like http://www.myblogpost.com/mycard?1. The specific number you use doesn’t really matter. It just has to be different for each time you use that post’s link. If you use the same post only twice, you can add any number. Hope this answers your question! 🙂 ~ Andrea

Hi Elsie. Are you entering the same exact URL for the second entry? If so, the tool may think it’s a duplicate.

    TY. That worked!

Maria, I love your card. Looks like the leaves are falling. The colors of the leaves are great too.

I love your card. Simple and beautiful. I don’t think it needs anything else but if I had made it, I’m sure I would — that is how it goes, right!? So…. I can’t figure out how to comment on the one submitted before mine 🙁

I ordered that die set from Mama Elephant as soon as I saw it, and it got way up here to Alberta in no time!! Of course I had to start cutting as soon as I opened the package (It’s GREAT set– so useful for so many things)
Isn’t this how the process works: Open parcel, start die cutting, forget about dinner for hubby, keep cutting….??
Maybe I’ll even enter a challenge one day.

I know, Carole! I seem to lose my hunger whenever I go to my craft room. It’s a great way to quit snacking! Of course, the family would like dinner at a decent time…

Hi Darlene, I tried to leave a comment for Charlene Thompson #49 but I could not get through on the link 🙁 I went and left comment on Shirley H and plan on visiting all the lovely cards linked. Beautiful job everyone, it really is amazing what one can accomplish with a lot of white space.
