March Challenge: STENCILS!!

March challenge

Hi All!

Welcome to the first-ever LiveLoveCards challenge! When I thought about how to structure the challenges, I decided to make it as flexible as possible. So, the challenge could be on a product, a technique, a color combination, a photo inspiration… anything. We’ll mix it up! And we’ll start on the first Monday of the month.

For our first one, the challenge will be STENCILS. Gosh there are so many things you can do with a stencil. I seriously can’t wait to see what you all come up with. I learn from your comments and questions every day, so I’m so excited to see your work.

You all are so generous in your comments on my posts. I’d like to share the praise… each time you enter, please go to the entry before yours and leave a comment. Share the love. We can all use a little pick-me-up. Or a big pick-me-up on occasion. πŸ™‚

The last day to submit your entry is Sunday, March 29th, 11:59pm CT. Two random winners will be selected from all entries and announced on Monday, March 30th.
SimonSaysStamp Gift Voucher
The giveaway for March will be a $25 gift voucher to Simon Says Stamp, one of my favorite stores!

Even though a random winner is selected at the end of the month, the challenge is open indefinitely. Please continue to post to the challenges, and I will periodically highlight future entries in my posts. Continuously seeing everyone’s new work is a win for everyone’s inspiration!

Okay, so here are the official rules:

  • Your entry must include the use of a stencil in some way. And yes, you can make your own handmade stencil.
  • You can submit as many entries as you like! However, please submit only one entry per card. If you have two photos you would like to share and do not have a blog, link to a Pinterest board that contains both photos.
  • After submitting your entry, leave a comment on the entry just before yours.
  • Leave more comments on entries, if you’re so inclined. πŸ™‚
  • To be eligible for a prize, you must be an active member of LiveLoveCards at the time the winner is announced.
  • Each day ends at 11:59:59pm CT

Are you ready to enter? CLICK HERE!

If you’re experiencing technical problems, go to the Help Page or select the “Challenges” category in the Forum.

Need a little kick-start on your creativity? There is a category for stencils in the Gallery by Product, so check that out. And, I created a card with the Simon Says Stamp Irregular Dots stencil:

March Challenge

I used white pigment ink and yellow dye ink to create the 3D look. There is a 1/16″ matte around all the panels, thanks to my awesome trimmer. Measurements of the panels:

  • card base – 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″, folded
  • black panel – 4 1/8″ x 5 3/8″
  • circles panel, prior to splitting – 4″ x 5 1/4″
  • split cuts – 1 11/16″, 1 12/16″ from each side

I noticed that the new Lawn Fawn Scripty Sayings set I use is out of stock at both stores. Simon Says Stamp has one very similar called Handwritten Borders. Accompanying video is below. Scroll down for supplies and the Challenge Submission area.

Have fun!

Too bad, I literally own zero stencils. I look forward to entering next month’s challenge.

I was wondering what the misty was that you posted about previously, now I know!

Thanks for another cute card idea.

Make your own Stencil Sarah! That’s why I said homemade stencils are fine (there was a typo in my post, so maybe it wasn’t clear – I fixed it). Do you have a die cut machine? Cut a shape (or shapes) out of a piece of typing paper, post-it, or masking paper.

Thanks for the push! I have never used them or thought about making them before, so today I challenged myself and tried something new. Thanks Darlene! Will be entering what I experimented with today <3

My crafting friend is letting me borrow some of hers this weekend since my home made ones tend to fall apart when I use them. I guess I am too rough on them! looking forward to more fun with stencils

I have needed a reason to use my stencils. This is the push I need. Thanks. Off to my craft room.

Oh Darlene, I knew you were going to come up with something fabulous for this challenge, I’m excited to participate.
I love the 3-D look of your card, it’s amazing how much depth you gave those circles with the colors, just fabulous.
I have some stencils that are in the depths of one of my drawers in my stamp room, I’m going to dig them out and see what I can come up with.
I LOVE, LOVE your sponge dauber’s storage box, I’ve never see this (or maybe I missed it?) but I will get one of this boxes at Hobby Lobby and put my daubers there, as of now, they are all in a plastic box and when I need one, I have to go and dig it out.
Thank you for this challenge, I can’t wait to see what everybody will make.

Wowza girl! You wield a Tsquare like no one else. Wonderful card. The challenge sounds great. My greatest challenge seems to be finding enough room on my craft table to work!

OMGosh Diana, I think I was working in one square foot on a 16 square foot table last week, lol! It’s so funny how that happens.

Darlene – I think in another life I must have been a hamster. I have all this stuff around me all the time – it’s like my “nest.” I clean it up and in 10 minutes it’s a mess again…

I love the way the yellow and white turned out on the circles. I could see this being done with a balloon stencils. Which I may have to make me one. Thanks for sharing. Beautiful card. You will come to love your MISTI.

    Hi Darlene,
Thank you very much for yet another interesting video. One little tip from my side: I had the same problem with the lids of my versafine inkpads so I just dismantled them. They came off easily without the plastic joints breaking and they still close tightly afterwards.
Have a nice and crafty week.

    Hi Darlene,
I have tried to upload a “Challenge Pic” it states the URL link may not be empty?? What should I do here when just uploading a pic?? & when leaving a comment do we add comment here or on the challengers link?? Love your card, so simple & effective! Cheers, Tina

    • wrote on March 2nd, 2015 at 7:25 pm

      Darlene DeVries

Hi Tina. Yes, you have to enter a URL, you can’t just upload the photo by itself. InLinkz recommends that you upload the photo to a free photo sharing site (like Flickr) and use the link from them. Comments should be added to the person’s own blog, not here. Thank you for participating!! πŸ™‚

      Darlene DeVries

Hi Pam. I see your photo, but it is not linking to your Pinterest so that I can see a bigger version of your photo. If you bring up your photo in Pinterest, you can copy the URL in your address bar. This URL is the direct link to your photo. If you want to reply to this comment and send that URL to me, I can update your entry. This URL needs to go into the “link” field when you enter your photo. Sorry if this is confusing.

I have a big problem. I am still trying to figure out how to send you a video I told you about in a comment some time ago that involved my granddaughter. I tried emailing but it wouldn’t work. So thank you for your comment to Danette on March 15th. I would love to enter a card for the challenge but sadly haven’t figured out about links. I am one of those that has to read everything about how to’s before trying anything. It takes me forever to learn all these technical things. I should just do the trial and error thing I guess. Can I email you my entry?

    • wrote on March 19th, 2015 at 7:54 pm

      Darlene DeVries

Hi Patty. No worries about the video. If you eventually figure it out, that’s great. If not, just knowing about what your granddaughter did is good enough. So funny! Of course you can email me a photo of your entry! I will post it to Pinterest for you and send you the link to use.

Darlene, this is a great challenge and so many different ways to use stencils. I love all the cards.
Just wondering, in the requirements you’ve said to comment on the card before your entry. Is there a comment section on your website or do you comment on the entry card’s blog? I would hate to make my entry void. Alao I’m entering from overseas is that ok? I don’t know which city is in central time to know if I have entered everything before midnight. I hope this is ok.
I love your cards and thanks for the challenge.

I am so thrilled to be drawn a winner of the first challenge. Thank you so much Darlene, it was a great opportunity to splurge on some simonsaysstamps goodies. Everyone made such beautiful cards, it was so enjoyable to see everyone’s talent. I haven’t used stencils since I first started card making, it was just the encouragement I needed to drag out some hardly used stuff and try something different. I’m looking forward to the next challenge.
