March Challenge: Pastels!

Pastel Challenge

It’s time for the March challenge! I have to admit that I was a little hesitant about using pastel colors. It’s definitely not something I do a lot. In fact, I had to pull out retired paper to make this card, lol!

The last day to submit your entry is Saturday, March 31st, 11:59pm CT. One random winner will be selected from all entries and announced on Monday, April 2nd.

SimonSaysStamp Gift Voucher
The giveaway will be a $25 gift voucher to Simon Says Stamp, one of my favorite stores!

Okay, just to recap the main rules:

  • Your entry must incorporate pastel colors.
  • You can submit as many entries as you like! However, please submit only one entry per card.
  • After submitting your entry, leave a comment on the entry just before yours.
  • Leave more comments on entries, if you’re so inclined. 🙂
  • To be eligible for a prize, you must be an active member of LiveLoveCards at the time the winner is announced and your card must have been made in the current month.

Are you ready to enter? CLICK HERE!

Even though I’m not a huge fan of pastels, I was very happy with the way my card turned out. These bunnies are so cute!

Pastel Challenge

The coloring is extremely simple, and even the die cutting is easy – all the measurements are listed below. Here is a close-up:

I hope this qualifies as pastels. I cut the card and letters with my Scan N Cut. Used a Zyron sticker maker to make the letters into stickers. The decoration at the bottom is a sticker I’ve had in my stash for a very long time.

Concord and 9th Bear Hugs
This card was made today for a young girl in Peru who I sponsor through Compassion, a Christian organisation based in Australia. After I made the card, I realised it was in pastel shades although this hadn't been my original intention. So I decided to make the card my entry in this month's Challenge. The bear was coloured with Copics. It is a simple card I know but hopefully she'll like it.

Background colored with liquid watercolors on Strathmore WC paper; I added some iridescent medium to the paint to give it some shimmer. Words cut with Sizzix celebrate dies; frame is a dies from Mama Elephant. I did a little surgery to create the word 'to'. Added sequins and Gelly Roll Star Dust pen to bling it up 🙂

This is an oldie but goody embossing folder from Stampin' Up called Manhatten Flower. I embossed it on vellum card stock and colored in with alcohol markers on the back, added a gold stitched frame and gold embossed sentiment. I make cards for our person at church to who sends out cards to congregational members.

Trying a technique from Jennifer Macquire. I cut two backgrounds and added pattern paper die cuts to create the open effect. It was fun to try!

Paper smooches botanicals 3 stamps. SU! Chalk lines for the fence and SU! inks with prismacolor pencils for detail and a little Stampin' pastels to add a little color to the flowers. It's a real challenge to use soft colors. You can hardly see them, LOL! I dry embossed the stamped image with a lined sizzix EF. Adhered the panel onto a script paper. TfL!

"Thank You" SU Stamp Set
Pink Pirouette Cardstock was used with the "Quilt top" SU embossing folder to create the background for the "Thank You So Very Much " stamp set. Rose Red stamping ink was used for the sentiment because of its pink qualities as well as the base CS.

I'm making a lot of Easter cards to sell at my church. Easter. really lends itself to pastels!
Easter Card
Easter Card
Background dry embossed with We R Memory Keepers Geometric Blocks. This design is a free cut file from Birds Cards. The sentiment is from Stampin' Up Tiny Tiny Wishes and heat embossed in gold. The cross overlay is on mat gold card stock. Easter cards do lend themselves to the use of pastel shades.
Pan Pastels with Darice Embossing Folder
Pan Pastels with Darice Embossing Folder
I first embossed the card using a Darice embossing folder with Stampin Up Very Vanilla card-stock. Then I lightly applied Pan Pastel brown and pastel shades to the embossed area to try to achieve an ethereal look intended to be calming and peacefu for the recipientl. Because I have a number of friends going through challenging times right now, this card is going to be sent to one of them.
Peonies
Peonies
Struggling with pastels - I tried to soften the colors to make them more pastel-y. LOL! Image by Polina Bright - she has some lovely images for coloring - for free. I resized the image, then traced onto watercolor paper. Used Mijello Mission Gold watercolors.
Easter Eggs
Easter Eggs
When I think Pastel, I usually think Easter or Baby...so Easter it is. This is a very old Peddlers Pack Stamp that I love. I've used it often for Easter cards. Colored with various markers and glitter pens.
Tulips Pastels Card
Tulips Pastels Card
Soft pastel cards are not usually my thing so this Challenge has been very challenging. Also my photographic skills leave much to be desired. But I enjoyed making this card for my bible study leader whose husband has a heart condition and now is starting chemotherapy this week as well! The ladies today asked if I'd make a card for all of us to give to her. So this is the card I came up with this afternoon. I used one of my favourite embossing folders by Darice to colour with pastel coloured Pastels, spraying it with hair spray afterward to set.. Then I gold heat embossing the sentiment on the card front before mounting it to a good weight pink card base. Inside the card, a white insert was placed so an additional gold heat embossed sentiment could be put. And on the back of the card by the Made By stamp, I added a tiny gold heat embossed angel.

You’re how old?
You’re how old?
Many of my girlfriends are turning 60 this year(including me!) so I thought this was a cute card to welcome them into their silver years! Thought it turned out pretty cute. My copic skills are less than stellar but I hope these colors pass for pastel.
Pastel Easter Card
Pastel Easter Card
Pastels seem especially appropriate for Easter cards and probably was one reason why Darlene chose pastel for this month's Challenge, So, since I always exchange Easter cards with a girlfriend, I decided to make sure my card was pastel this year. I used another Darice embossing folder. After masking off the cross, I applied the pastel coloured Pastels in order of the rainbow from top to bottom. Since there's no orange coloured pastel in my set, I made sure the pink and yellow overlapped to form orange. I always use hair spray lightly to set the pastels before foam mounting the panel on the card base. I used a retired lilac colour for the card base in Stampin Up 80lb card-stock. I preferred to leave the front of the card simple without any clutter. So as the background of the card front was Very Vanilla, I gold heat embossed Easter Blessings onto Very Vanilla card-stock to stick inside the card.

Pastel Flower Flip-it.JPG
Pastel Flower Flip-it.JPG
I created this using the new Sizzix Flower Flip-it die set. This is a drop-in set where there will be other dies to drop into the frame other than the flower dies. I chose pastel colors for this and added butterflies to the card. I used the set butterfly2stamp from The Stamps of Life for the sentiment, and sayings4butterfly for the smaller colored in one. The punched butterflies were made using a Martha Stewart punch. I added gems to the centers of the small butterfly and the flower. Thanks for looking! lovinpaper

Didn't turn out as pastel as I thought it would. I wanted to get the look of those eggs we used to have with scenes inside of them. I loved the little bunnies in this stamp set from Tiddly Ink.
Stencil & Pastel Distress
Stencil & Pastel Distress
This is a fun technique! Blend several shades of Distress Oxides on watercolor paper then cover it with a moistened stencil (Papertrey Woodblock Prints).I didn’t press down on the stencil- I just left it for about a minute then carefully lifted it off. After it was dry, I trimmed and adhered it to an A2 card base, adding the die cut (Papertrey In the Woods Cover Plate) and sentiment (Papertrey Keep It Simple Sympathy).
Little One Pastels

Parakeet birthday
Parakeet birthday
I had another challenge this month (nothing like waiting until the last minute) to create a card using a stamp set I’d never used. I could complete lots of challenges with this criteria! So I used Garden Girl and Bird Banter and tried to stick to pastels for a double whammy. I used Pool Party, Soft Sky, Lemon Lime Twist, and Sahara Sand for my main colors.
Brusho Poppies
Brusho Poppies
I was playing around with my Brushos and trying to copy a technique that I saw Sandy Allnock use where she embossed flower centers, added water to the centers, sprinkled Brusho onto the water, and then used her paintbrush to swirl flower petals. I am always amazed at her talent. This was me trying it with a not-so-great brush. I used an aqua painter, which wasn’t bad, but I do want to invest in some of the nicer brushes that are great for water coloring.

This will be a fabulous challenge, we all need a bit of softness and color after this awful Winter, we’re still not out of it up here in the Upper Mid West.
Thank you for the video, it’s great as always.

What a cute card! Great job, Darlene! I thought the March Challenge had to use the pastels medium and was pleased to know that we only need to use pastel colours. Your card would be a great Easter bunny card too for some lucky child!

We are just going into Autumn here (Fall) and it reminded me that the colours in nature are about to change. Better get my thinking cap on for March.
