The theme for July is washi tape! Honestly, I haven’t used washi tape that much. It’s been more of an embellishment on my cards rather than one of the main ingredients. So, as it goes with a lot of these challenges, it’s a challenge for me too!
The last day to submit your entry is Sunday, July 31st, 11:59pm CT. One random winner will be selected from all entries and announced on Monday, August 1st.
The giveaway will be a $25 gift voucher to Simon Says Stamp, one of my favorite stores!
Even though a random winner is selected at the end of the month, the challenge is open indefinitely. Please continue to post to the challenges. Continuously seeing everyone’s new work is a win for everyone’s inspiration!
Okay, just to recap the main rules:
- Your entry must incorporate washi tape in some way.
- You can submit as many entries as you like! However, please submit only one entry per card.
- After submitting your entry, leave a comment on the entry just before yours.
- Leave more comments on entries, if you’re so inclined. 🙂
- To be eligible for a prize, you must be an active member of LiveLoveCards at the time the winner is announced and your card must have been made in the current month.

I rose to the occasion by buying some new washi tape, since I didn’t have a set of anything colorful that I liked. I LOVE this set of tape. The colors are great. I created three different cards for today:
I really wanted to use washi tape in a more creative way than just slapping it onto some paper (not that there’s anything wrong with that, because I did a lot of that too!). So, I created a ruffle on two of the cards. Watch the video for a simple way to ruffle – don’t even attempt doing it free-hand without any tools because you’ll throw the tape across the room. 🙂
Here’s the first card:
I did a ruffle on the teal tape. Here is a close-up:
For the next card, I let the washi tape show through a die cut hole:
I used my black Gansai Tambi paint to create the splatters. This paint creates the BEST splatters because they are dark black and glossy when dry. Here is a close-up:
Finally, I created this simple card using a ruffle on both the teal and pink:
Enjoy the video. I look forward to seeing your creations!

Love your cards. Thank you for demonstrating the pleating – you are so clever! I am on my way to my work room to try it right now. Like you, I rarely use Washi tape although I have a few rolls of it. You are such an inspiration!
Jan
Nice job on the washi tape, Darlene. The pleated washi tape and candle stamp is impressive. The colors are great together also. Have a great 4th.
Suzanne
Three very colorful cute cards! So clever of you to figure out how to ruffle that sticky tape!! I think I will have to try that!
Carolynn
Nice examples, Darlene. I LOVE washi tape, and I’m always looking for any reason to use it ( and get more…. ;-P )
Irene
I finally tried your trick for laying the card front onto a base, using the MISTI for alignment. Wow! So quick and easy and frustration-free! I had been using my scoring board before, but it didn’t always work.) Don’t know why I waited so long to try it. Thanks for the tip!

Love the colours Darlene! I don’t use washi tape very often, but I should cuz it makes it fast and easy to make colourful card! The black trim on the cake card just makes it!
Bertie
Thanks for the ideas for using washi tape. I buy it, admire it but never use it. I will try pleating it for sure.
Andrea
Neat ideas for washi tape! I love the ruffled strips, and thank you so much for showing us how to do it more easily. I did have to chuckle when you said you “stuck” the congratulations die cut on your card. I know what you mean, but using that word just sounded funny to me somehow.I have a rather vast collection of washi, which I almost never use for anything other than craft room “decoration,” so maybe this will inspire me to use it on cards more! 😀 Thank you for this challenge, Darlene, and for sharing your lovely cards. ~ Andrea

Just when I begin to think you can’t possibly come up with anything else unique, you do! I love the pleating of the wash tape so much. You make it look very easy to do. I may not be as successful without a lot of practice! Even so, I’m going to give it a go! Thanks again for your clever inspiration.

Love these cards! I have a few rolls of washi tape that I never even opened. I guess it’s time to open them up and play!
Glenismaree
I love all three cards. I am not a washi tape person, in fact, I don’t think I have any at all. I shall look around for some. I love the colours of yours. Thanks again for another great set of cards Darlene.

The ruffles are really quite clever. I have Washi Tape and can’t figure out good uses for them. This is a good challenge.
Diana
Darling cards. Again – you are so clever. So many new ideas. I love Washi tape but forget to use it. I’ll try harder now, thanks to you. Love those color combinations. Have a safe and healthy 4th of July

The pleating is very cool! And you make it look so easy!! Great cards Darlene. I’m like most everyone else, I like Washi, and buy tons of it, but never really use it. I guess it’s time to put it to use. Thanks for the inspiration!!

These are adorable!

Darlene…#9 is my Washi Flower . First attempt at linking a photo from Instagram & obviously didn’t do very well . Photo in wrong position & apparently can’t be opened. Maybe I’ll make another attempt this weekend .
Anita
Darlene,
I entered # 29 and 30 because I wanted you to see both versions, however I do believe only one should count towards the draw as they are so similar. Please feel free to remove one of them : )
Also may I suggest a possible challenge to be a baby card. I find I need baby cards now and again and they’re handy to have in the stash.
