January Challenge: Cool Colors

January Challenge

Hi All!

Welcome to the January challenge! This month is about creating cards with cool colors… greens, blues, and purples. Combine them with any neutrals you want. I love them with black and white! Don’t feel you have to include all three colors – just one or two colors work too!

The last day to submit your entry is Tuesday, January 31st, 11:59pm CT. One random winner will be selected from all entries and announced on Wednesday, February 1st.

SimonSaysStamp Gift Voucher
The giveaway will be a $25 gift voucher to Simon Says Stamp, one of my favorite stores!

Okay, just to recap the main rules:

  • Your entry must incorporate greens, blues, and/or purples.
  • You can submit as many entries as you like! However, please submit only one entry per card.
  • After submitting your entry, leave a comment on the entry just before yours.
  • Leave more comments on entries, if you’re so inclined. 🙂
  • To be eligible for a prize, you must be an active member of LiveLoveCards at the time the winner is announced and your card must have been made in the current month.

Are you ready to enter? CLICK HERE!

For my card, I used Gansai Tambi watercolors for my cool background:

I incorporated the Whimsical Waves background stamp into my word die cut for something different and interesting. Here is a close-up:

Enjoy the video. I look forward to seeing your entries!

Always In Our Hearts
Always In Our Hearts
This is a sympathy card I made (unfortunately I had to make 3 of them all at once). I liked the soft turquoise color and I used an old stamp set that was a collaboration of Hero Arts and Archiver's. I used a layering technique that I learned at some point from YouTube.
Cool Blue Thank You card
Cool Blue Thank You card
This card uses Stampin Up Bashful Blue (retired) paper and ink and card base is Marina Mist. The stamp sets used are SU Pleasant Poppies, Four Frames,Teeny Tiny Wishes and the backgroup is French Script.
Mother's Day cards
Mother's Day cards
These Mother's Day cards uses Hero Arts Neon Ombre Ink for the butterflies and Distress Inks for the background. The stamp set is Hero Arts Butterfly Pair and the dies are included! They don't cut the middle of the butterflies so the wings can be bent upwards. I think I used too many sequins! 🙂
Cool Tropical Birthday
Cool Tropical Birthday
Very un-tropical colors for this card, but I still like the way it looks. I used my new pencils (christmas present to me from me LOL), and really like them.
Connie's Cool Color Card

Darlene inspired me to use the MFT Balloon Strings background stamp in a similar way to her MFT Whimsical Waves background stamp. Instead of using ithe stamp as balloon strings, I turned the stamp on its side to have it depict rolling hills. The effect I wanted to achieve was an early morning scene with purple haze rolling over the hills.

The flowers were stamped on the inside edge and the front was trimmed by about 3cm to see through to the flowers.

I am following a sketch by Split Coast Stampers for this card. The sketch is SC627. I used Power Poppy, Potted Primroses for the flower and sentiment. The paper is from Gina K Designs, Wild Lilac and Birthday Hoot for the patterned paper. The image was colored with Spectrum Noir markers. The shimmer on the cardstock was sprayed. This card is being used at Split Coast Stampers, the Mod Squad Challenge blog, Power Poppy and here. This was probably the first time that I have made a card that has met so many challenges that I remember.

This card has just been made for a friend who is into Astrology in a big way. She knows I'm not a true believer but thought she'd love this card,so I made it! I heat embossed in silver an old Hero Arts constellation background stamp on watercolour paper. Then I did a blue background wash using only 2 colours of blue (light and dark). After this, I sprayed the whole piece with shimmer spray. It makes it look like there are millions of tiny stars twinkling. Then I heat embossed in white on black cardstock Be The Star You Are from a Stampin Up stamp set. I didn't want the sentiment to take away from the starry background that ended up being the focal point, so I just put it in the lower left inconspicuously.

Background text was white heat embossed, then various distress inks are used for background color. The YOU was diecut 2x - once from white and once from black, then layered to create a shadow. Text stamp is called "You matter" from Simon Says stamp.
Kirarina wink markers dot method
Kirarina wink markers dot method
I wanted to try out your chalk marker method but didn't have them so decided I would try the Kirarina wink markers that I have not used much. Unfortunately some of the markers show up better on black cardstock than others. So I ended up using a dot method with white throughout and then color next to and on white in some instances. I was also limited on what colors I have. Added the border from one of your videos and was a little too wonky but it added a little fun border that I really like! Thanks for the inspiration Darlene! ~God bless~

Pop and Twist card
Pop and Twist card
I have really wanted to try a Pop and Twist card and finally decided to just do it! I used Teal blue American crafts card stock and papers, and stamped two decorative bird images from Hero Arts for the front, using a subtle Sage shadow SU ink. I was so very pleased with this card I might even do another one! Ha

Even though the grass looks kind of yellow (warm color) in the photo, it really is green! I made this card for my mom to send to some friends who are going through a bad time. I made these with Ken Oliver Color Bursts with a 12x12 stencil then cut up the sheet of watercolor paper to make four cards. I laid them out in the photo so you could kind of see the overall stencil. I sprinkled the powder on dry then spritzed with water. I also spray my Color Burst creations with a matte spray varnish.

I created this card for a friend whose birthday is next week. I used Winnie & Walter's "The Party" for the images, masking everything as I stamped & stenciled the background. Except for the banner, it is just a one-layer card. I'm really happy with how this came out!

I CASEd a card I saw on Pinterest for this one. My mom asked me to make a card for her writers guild members to give to a member whose wife recently suffered a stroke. I used Mowed Lawn Distress ink to stamp the floral image & greeting--thank heavens for my MISTI, since I had to stamp multiple times! 🙂

Great card…love it! What nozzle do you have on your Multi Medium Mat?

Actually, it’s a tip that someone gave to me, and I don’t know the name. It’s not very sophisticated – a straight pin is what closes it.

    Hi Darlene,
Great technique for us to try!
I’m also interested in the nozzle on your Multi Medium. Have you tried the ones from Quilled Creations? If so, how you find them in comparison to each other? I don’t see the nozzle you’re using on the SSS website. Where did you get it?

Hi Lesley, it’s a tip that someone gave to me, and I don’t know the name. It’s not very sophisticated – a straight pin is what closes it. I get this question a lot, so I will try and do some research to figure out who makes it!

This is a cool card, Darlene! (Like the double entendre there? LOL) Being an Aquarius, I guess I’m naturally drawn to cool colors, so hopefully this will prove to be a fun challenge for me. Love how you got the wave lines to go across the die cut word. I never would have guessed that’s how you did it! When I saw the photo first, I thought you’d adhered the “friend” to the background and then stamped the waves. I think your way works much better, though! Thanks for sharing all your creative inspiration! 🙂 ~ Andrea

    Colorful Card Maker

I think I can totally do this! I see I have plenty of time since I am still making some of my Christmas cards and cards for some swaps I am behind on. I have plenty of those colors in pencils, markers and water colors so I’m sure I can come up with something. In fact, I am getting an idea for a card right now! Oh my gosh, I think I came up with something so cool it will blow your mind! LOL Now I have to right it down so I don’t forget what I want to do.
I like your card. I have to watch the video to see how you did it but I really like it.
