Hi All,
Welcome to the February Challenge! But first, the winner of the January challenge… entry #2: Hannah M! Congrats, Hannah, I emailed you.
Lots of people have asked me for more masculine cards over the years. To tell you the truth, I don’t send a lot of masculine cards out. I will create cards for my husband, but they generally contain hearts and critters. This will be a good opportunity to get me out of the box!
Here are some of the helpful tips for masculine cards I gave in the heads-up last week:
- Stick with cool colors – blues, greens, purples. Add accents of brown and black.
- Rather than flowers and butterflies, think more about shapes and lines.
- Don’t use curly fonts – go with straight edges and blocks.
If you are new to the community, I encourage you to check out the Challenges Page for detailed information about how the challenges work.
The last day to submit your entry is Monday, February 29th, 11:59pm CT. One random winner will be selected from all entries and announced on Tuesday, March 1st.
The giveaway will be a $25 gift voucher to Simon Says Stamp, one of my favorite stores!
Even though a random winner is selected at the end of the month, the challenge is open indefinitely. Please continue to post to the challenges. Continuously seeing everyone’s new work is a win for everyone’s inspiration!
Okay, just to recap the main rules:
- Your entry must be masculine-like.
- You can submit as many entries as you like! However, please submit only one entry per card.
- After submitting your entry, leave a comment on the entry just before yours.
- Leave more comments on entries, if you’re so inclined. 🙂
- To be eligible for a prize, you must be an active member of LiveLoveCards at the time the winner is announced.

Creating four cards at once was really easy with this design, and I had no scrap cardstock leftover. I used the Stampin’ Up! Sunburst die, but other companies make similar dies, such as Simon Says Stamp, Impression Obsession, and My Favorite Things.
Here is the inside for this one:
Enjoy the video I look forward to seeing your creations!

Darlene,….I LOVE your card, esp. the sentiments….lol. HEY….my card is FIRST for the challenge!! hehehehe. Masculine cards are especially challenging for me. I mean…what is a card without sequins or ruffles and such??!
Hannah
My name Is Hannah Marie. When I first glanced at it I was so excited, then I look at the entry number, and thought “2? That doesn’t sound right?” I clicked on it and saw the winner was Hannah Means! So close!
Congratulations Hannah!
Mairead
Aww, maybe next time!
Connie
Boo Hoo Hannah Marie and Woo Hoo Hannah Means. Hope Hannah Marie is a lucky winner soon.
Darlene DeVries
Oh no, Hannah – that’s terrible. I’m so sorry!

Hey Darlene…how do you take such great pics of your your cards? I really havn’t had consistent results on my process…boooooo!!! What is your set up like?
catcards004
OK….after i asked about your setup, i saw your original post of your old set up. Do you still use the Ottlite for pictures? Does it not need a filter to difuse the light? Your pics always look amazing!
Darlene DeVries
Hi Cat! Yes, I use the same process, with the standing Ott-lite. I don’t have a filter – I just angle it from the side a little.

Thanks, Darlene!

Love, love, love this card and love, love, love the colours. Ideal for the males in our lives.
KimmieD
Would have NEVER considered using this die this way – thanks for the idea!
Connie
Great colour combination. Don’t have this die but a stencil that’s very similar so plan to experiment with it. Thanks for the inspiration!

Great cards! I really like the way you fixed “the mistake”. That is something that could be done with any sentiment, which I’ve done in the past. The outside of cards are lovely whether simple or complex, but the inside is just a let down after getting so excited about the outside. I always try to jazz it up a bit.
Elyse
I love these cards, and plan to make one of them for my teen grandson. You used sentiments from 2 additional stamps that you didn’t reference (Warm thoughts & You Are My Sunshine). Would you please let me know which stamps these are?
Darlene DeVries
Hi Elyse. Sure… “Warm Thoughts” is from Paper Smooches Sentiment Sampler and “You are my sunshine” is from Simon Says Stamp My Sunshine.
Elyse
Thanks, Darlene, for your quick response. I’ll be ordering both of these.

Love it Darlene! I have a lot of men in my life including husband, sons, dad, son-in-laws,etc. Love this idea.

Hi Darlene, you didn’ link to the SSS starburst die (as you said in your video). The SU die is really expensive so I would like to see the SSS price. thanks a lot. Love these sentiments…I have to get them.
Darlene DeVries
Hi Carol. I did link to three other dies in the paragraph just above the photo of the four cards together.
Carol Mac
Ahhhh! Got it, thanks.

I love your dramatic but simple cards Darlene. I’ve gotten so many ideas from all the entries this month. Hey, I think that’s the idea. To expand our creativitiy and learn from each other. Such fun!

Finally managed to submit a card(s) to the challenge! Luckily both my boys have birthdays in February. Love seeing what everyone creates for the challenges – all so different.
