Gelatos and Background Highlighting

Just a Note

Hi All!

I’m excited to say that I was invited into the Ellen Hutson CLASSroom today!!

I made a card using Faber Castell Design Memory Craft Gelatos and Big Brush Pens from the blue and green Mixed Media Sets. I love how the markers glide and blend on top of the Gelatos. I also used the Big Brush white pen for highlights – it’s opaque and applies like a marker. I used my finger to blend pretty much everything, but the good news is that everything is water soluble. So, no inky fingers. πŸ™‚

Head on over to the Ellen Hutson CLASSroom to read more about this card and see the video. I’ve also posted the video below.

See you Wednesday!

Darlene

I’ve been admiring your work for some time and I’m always looking forward to your Wednesday creations. They are always beautiful and your videos are a great help and inspiration. Unfortunately we can’t buy any Gelatos in Germany which is funny because Faber Castell is a German Company. I’d love to try them out but – no chance, they are not for sale here or anywhere else in Europe. So I would be very, very happy to win this gorgeous pack and finally get the chance to work with them. But anyway, your work is great and I really love it. Thank you so much!

Quick question: After you’re finished colouring and blending, do you have to heat set the card to keep it from smearing or do the colours set by themselves after a certain amount of time? When I emboss resist, I use a paper towel to wipe off residual ink on the actual embossed part, but I was wondering if using a paper towel on this would just smear the colours?

    • wrote on April 16th, 2013 at 8:38 am

      Darlene DeVries

Sonya, the gelatos absorb into the paper really well, so they don’t smudge or need a fixative. And, when I blended them with my finger, they got rubbed off the embossed areas, so that wasn’t a problem. I didn’t need to wipe it down. In fact, if you apply water to the gelatos, it will mute the color, so I wouldn’t!

I learned so much from this video! I have hesitated using black embossing in the past, but it really does wonders for this card! I am a new Gelato user, so I appreciate all the techniques and hints you gave us! Is there another way/thing to use to spread the Gelato other than a finger? I have “stubby” fingers, and tend to have a hard time not just making a giant smear!

Thank you for the tip with the vellum….very clever! Why didn’t I think of it?…okay…I’m not clever…! So the panel you cut lost a total 1/4″ from the overal dsign? It looks like the complete design. • wrote on April 17th, 2013 at 7:22 pm

A.Rose: Actually, I’m not sure about climate control. It gets pretty hot in my craft room and some of my Gelatos are at least a year old. They seem to be exactly the same as when I bought them. You can probably check out the Faber Castell Web site for more detailed info on that.

What a pretty card! I love the colorful flowers! We’re actually under a blizzard warning today… not quite sure why! LOL! Guess it is going to get worse this afternoon. But, anyway I love seeing pretty spring flowers anywhere I can since I can’t grow them here even when there’s not a blizzard!
