April Challenge: Rainbows!

April Challenge

Hi All!

Before I get to the challenge, important announcement: Stampin’ Up! has free shipping now through Friday, April 10th! Shop with my sister and 20% goes to foster kids. You’re welcome. Okay, back to business…

It’s the first Monday of the month, so it’s time for the next challenge. For April, the theme is rainbows! Such a beautiful color spectrum that is so pleasing to the eye. Make it a background, make it a focal point. Color the rainbow with markers or watercolor paints. Put the rainbow together with colored cardstock. Use a stencil and ink it up with rainbow colors. There are so many ways to be creative with this theme. I can’t wait to see the entries!

There were two frequently asked questions in last month’s challenge:

  1. Can I enter if I don’t have a blog? Yes. I created some instructions on what to do HERE.
  2. Where exactly am I supposed to leave the comment? I asked that everyone leave a nice comment on the entry just prior to yours. To do this, click on that person’s entry. You will be taken to their blog, Pinterest, Flickr, Splitcoast, or wherever their photo is posted. Leave your comment there (not on LiveLoveCards).

The last day to submit your entry is Sunday, April 26th, 11:59pm CT. One random winner will be selected from all entries and announced on Monday, April 27th.

SimonSaysStamp Gift Voucher
The giveaway will be a $25 gift voucher to Simon Says Stamp, one of my favorite stores!

Even though a random winner is selected at the end of the month, the challenge is open indefinitely. Please continue to post to the challenges, and I will periodically highlight future entries in my posts. Continuously seeing everyone’s new work is a win for everyone’s inspiration!

Okay, so here are the official rules:

  • Your entry must include a rainbow spectrum of color in some way.
  • You can submit as many entries as you like! However, please submit only one entry per card.
  • After submitting your entry, leave a comment on the entry just before yours.
  • Leave more comments on entries, if you’re so inclined. 🙂
  • To be eligible for a prize, you must be an active member of LiveLoveCards at the time the winner is announced.

Are you ready to enter? CLICK HERE!

If you’re experiencing technical problems, go to the Help Page or select the “Challenges” category in the Forum.

I created a couple of rainbow cards for you. I used the same technique on both backgrounds: distress markers blended with water. I just designed a different card front to lay on top. The first one is a sun and rainbow using the Lawn Fawn Spring Showers Die Set:

I inlaid the sun but popped it up a bit. Here is a close-up:

I recorded a video for this one. Scroll down for supplies and the Challenge Submission area. Here is the second card using the Simon Says Stamp Butterfly Die Set:

Here is the line-up of colors I used:

In the video I talked about cleaning up the extra, pooling ink at the edge of the cardstock. If you don’t, the color starts to rise up and you get this staining:

I can’t wait to see what you come up with! Enjoy the video and have fun with the challenge. 🙂

Very pretty card and I am glad I got to see you cut that. I would have screwed up so many cards trying that. LOL. Thanks for sharing.

Oh my goodness Darlene, I was squirming when you applied the water to that section of the panel and it got messed up, I can only imagine you, sitting there, trying to think of a way to fix it, you are amazing!!! The details on your gorgeous card are just stunning.
I love this challenge, rainbows are awesome so this is going to be fabulous to create and share our cards. Thank you so much for inspiring us and challenging us to let our imagination fly.

Where did you get the triangular blade for the cricut trimmer. Mine does not have one. Love the rainbow cards.

Hi Jan. My trimmer came with it. Fiskars has several trimmers with the same type of blade.

You use the distress markers a lot. Can I use the Stampin Up markers the same way or are they very different products?

    • wrote on April 8th, 2015 at 11:14 pm

      Darlene DeVries

Unfortunately, they usually don’t work the same way. The distress markers dilute and blend with water easier than SU markers do. I know – I do use them a lot. I’m getting my money’s worth! 🙂

Here is my card! Thanks for the fun challenge Darlene. I’d never tried making a rainbow card. I actually made another one first but the watercolor crayons from SU! didn’t work very well. Now I know it is not the crayons, it’s my lack of practice, but I can always blame them, hey? It was not too bad but I like this one better. Hope you like it : )

I forgot to mention that I couldn’t leave a comment on the previous card maybe because I am not a member of Pinterest… sorry about that.

What makes your videos so special is that you are not afraid to show your goof ups and how you fix them as well as all the good stuff you do. I think I’ve learned almost as much from finding out what NOT to do or how to fix what I should NOT have done as what I should be doing in the first place. I liked your rainbow with Distress Markers and water. I used Distress Ink and a stamp with water for my rainbow but I don’t think it was as effective.

Connie, I’ve been working with foil over the last couple of weeks and I have PLENTY of things to share on what not to do, lol. Hopefully Friday or maybe next week. 🙂

@ Hannah Means – I tried to comment on your adorable card, but I couldn’t figure out how to do it on Flikr! I love it though!

@ Darlene – I love how you’re always so precise and exact and measure everything. I always eyeball everything. One of these days I’ll invest in a t-square and Misti! 🙂
